Coping Skill – Float Don’t Fight

enjoy the doing

-Matthew McConnaghey

Summary:

If in an anxious state, go with it – don’t try to fight or suppress the moment. Resisting feeds the anxiety, accepting the anxious moment brings.

Better to accept what is happening.

The present moment is all you ever own – but if swallowing ill-tasting medicine, sometimes it’s best to condition yourself not to think.

Detail:

Conditioning yourself not to judge and not to think is no small task.

Better to remind yourself of your goals and aspirations – picture why you want to achieve them, be grateful you have the opportunity to do so and once recalibrated… “enjoy the doin”.

If you can, you stop thinking about outcomes and consequences (and the associated stress that goes with it) then focus on the job in hand (the present tense).

Skill:

  • Practice mindfulness: Mindfulness can help you stay present and focused in the moment, and let go of worries about the past or future. Regular meditation practice can help you cultivate a mindset of going with the flow.
  • Cultivate flexibility: Be open to new experiences and ideas. Try new things and challenge yourself to step outside your comfort zone.
  • Embrace uncertainty: Recognize that life is full of uncertainty, and that you can’t control everything. Accept that some things are beyond your control, and focus on what you can control.
  • Let go of expectations: Release attachment to outcomes and let things unfold naturally. Don’t hold onto rigid expectations or preconceived notions.
  • Practice self-compassion: Be kind to yourself and acknowledge that you are doing the best you can. Let go of self-judgment and negative self-talk.
  • Trust the process: Have faith that things will work out as they are meant to, and trust that you will be able to handle whatever comes your way.
  • Find joy in the journey: Enjoy the process of life, and focus on the present moment rather than always striving for the next goal.
